Free antivirus from Microsoft: Windows Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

It is a free download (note that your PC must be running genuine Windows) from Microsoft. It’s easy to tell if your PC is secure — when you’re green, you’re good.

The antivirus runs quietly and efficiently in the background without interruptions or long computer wait times.

Minimum system requirements

Operating System: Genuine Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3); Windows Vista (Gold, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 2); Windows 7

• For Windows XP, a PC with a CPU clock speed of 500 MHz or higher, and 1 GB RAM or higher.
• For Windows Vista and Windows 7, a PC with a CPU clock speed of 1.0 GHz or higher, and 1 GB RAM or higher.
• VGA display of 800 × 600 or higher.
• 140 MB of available hard disk space.
• An Internet connection is required for installation and to download the latest virus and spyware definitions for Microsoft Security Essentials.
• Internet Browser:
  • Windows Internet Explorer 6.0 or later.
  • Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or later.

Important: the offer is for home users and home-based small businesses only (small biz can install it on up to 10 PCs)

Their end-user license agreement – EULA used to say:

You may install and use any number of copies of the software on your devices in your household for use by people who reside there or for use in your home-based small business.

but it now says instead (especially note the removal of the “home-based” requirement for small business):

Home Use. If you are a home user, then you may install and use any number of copies of the software on your personal devices for use by people who reside in your household.  As a home user, you may not use the software in any commercial, non-profit, or revenue generating business activities.

Small Business. If you operate a small business, then you may install and use the software on up to ten (10) devices in your business.

However, the quote “not use the software in any commercial, non-profit, or revenue generating business activities” leaves me puzzled. Did they mean to say “for-profit” instead? Or do they mean “even non-profit business activitites” (even more puzzling since this part is for home users and cause small biz can also use the s/w, so a home run business can be considered small biz usage). Moreover, when you get the software, I don’t remember it asking what kind of user you are and have you give more info. I guess what they wanted to say is that even if you use it at home, you can’t install more than 10 copies of it if it’s for home business use.

Btw, it may not be available in all countries (their site used to check your IP address in the past and was available mostly to the USA – however I noticed that for some time now it’s available for Greece too).

Grouping fields in HTML forms: fieldset and legend tags

While browsing Microsoft Translator interactive SDK pages, I noticed at their Create a Web Widget page, at the HTML tab, that the sample HTML code was using the fieldset and legend
tags. Very interesting tags, "fieldset" produces a nice looking group
box around the HTML content it encloses, whereas "legend" tag’s content
is the groupbox’s caption. I wonder though why HTML’s "legend" tag
wasn’t designed to be an attribute of the "fieldset" tag instead. May
they left the possibility open of reusing the "legend" tag in the
future outside of the "fieldset" tag.

Στη σελίδα της ΓΓΠΣ στην περιοχή που αφορά τους νέους (ενιαίους στην Ε.Ε.) Κωδικούς Αριθμούς Δραστηριοτήτων (ΚΑΔ), στο "Λιανικό εμπόριο εκτός από καταστήματα (μέσω internet, πλανόδια κλπ.)" υπάρχουν και οι κατηγορίες:

• "λογισμικού, με αλληλογραφία ή μέσω
  διαδίκτυου" με κωδικό "47.91.31" 
• "λογισμικού εκτός καταστημάτων, υπαίθριων πάγκων ή αγορών, άλλο"
  με κωδικό ΚΑΔ "47.99.31" (προσοχή δεν είναι ο ίδιος με τον παραπάνω)

Ας είναι καλά η Ε.Ε. που επιτέλους αποκτήσαμε ΚΑΔ που ανταποκρίνονται στη σύγχρονη πραγματικότητα.

My favorite cat rescuing game on the PC

Super Granny from Sandlot Games is a series of 2D platform games I really love. You control a granny cartoon-like character, trying to collect various stray cats and lead them to a safe place, while avoiding or fighting (or trapping into holes you dig with your shovel) various vicious opponents. You can play a version of it online in Flash, but I prefer running the downloadable version in fullscreen.

Make sure to also download the free levels available for the most recent Super Granny games (e.g. Super Granny in Paradise, Super Granny 3 and Super Granny 4 all have lots of extra levels there – also note the level editor and community sharing feature the recent Super Granny games include).

Latest MySQL .NET Connector missing features?

I noticed that if one installs the latest (version 6.0.4) MySQL .NET Connector, Server Explorer pane in Visual Studio 2008 doesn’t show the "Browse or Edit Data" action in the context menu for a table anymore. Uninstalling it and installing a previous version (tried with version 5.2.7) makes that action show up again OK.

Τώρα που πλησιάζουν και οι εκλογές…

Από το τεύχος 2 (άνοιξη 2009) του “ΤΑΧΥΔΡΟΜΙΚΟ ΤΑΜΙΕΥΤΗΡΙΟ magazine” (τριμηνιαία έκδοση), διαβάζω σε άρθρο-συνέντευξη του προέδρου (τη στιγμή της συνέντευξης) της Ένωσης Δικαστών κ’ Εισαγγελέων, Αεροπαγίτη, κ. Χ. Αθανασίου:

Αφορμή της συνέντευξης αυτής στάθηκε το επιτυχημένο προϊόν του 2008 με την ονομασία “Προσωπικό Δάνειο Προεξόφλησης Αναδρομικών Δημοσίου”, με το οποίο το Ταχυδρομικό Ταμιευτήριο προεξόφλησε στους εν ενεργεία και συνταξιούχους Δικαστικούς Λειτουργούς, Εισαγγελείς και μέλη του Νομικού Συμβουλίου του Κράτους, τις αναδρομικές παροχές του ν. 3620/2007.

Πολύ ενδιαφέρον. Δεν έχω ψάξει (π.χ. στο ΡΑΠΤΑΡΧΗΣ ή στο Εθνικό Τυπογραφείο) τι αναδρομικά ακριβώς ήταν αυτά (θα υποθέσω πως δικαίως δόθηκαν), μου θύμησε όμως τη γνωστή και πολλάκις επαναλαμβανόμενη εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια ιστορία, όπου οι βουλευτές ψηφίζουν κατά το δοκούν αυξήσεις στους μισθούς τους και στη συνέχεια οι δικαστικοί κερδίζουν στα δικαστήρια αναδρομικές αυξήσεις μιας και οι μισθοί τους (ιδίως των ανώτατων βαθμίδων που όμως απ’ότι φαίνεται συμπαρασύρουν και τις παρακάτω βαθμίδες) πρέπει να ακολουθούν συνταγματικά αυτές των βουλευτών.

Γιάννης κερνάει Γιάννης πίνει και για βουλευτές και για δικαστικούς δηλαδή. Ο φορολογούμενος (αλλά και ψηφοφόρος) πληρώνει άλλωστε…
